[philmont] Crazy Creek excels

George Taylor asked about camp chairs at Philmont.

The best camp chair at Philmont is a ten inch square piece of Colfax County. That being said, their real estate isn't what it used to be. When I was 14, it was soft and sushy. Today it's rock hard and bumpy. Of vourse, my old glutus maximus isn't what it used to be either.

Being 62 years old and having hiked Philmont at age 58, I'll comment from personal experience.

About ten years ago I discovered Crazy Creek chairs. I have several models and use them frequently. The large model stays behind the seat of my truck ready for many uses besides a chair.

Mainly I'm a canoeist, then a hiker. I ALWAYS take my CC chair on canoe trips. I got a "canoe" model that straps to the seat in a used canoe purchase. It's not what you would imagine it to be. If find it somewhat useless.

I pondered a long time over taking one to Philmont. I took my long model and used it in conjunction with a short Therma Rest under my sleeping bag. I used the unfolded chair below my legs more for insulation than for padding but it padded tham at night well.

And it was nice to sit in and have a little back support in the evening. That felt GOOD to old bones and muscles.

However, where it excelled was as a platform in front of my pack leaning abainst a tree. There it provided me with a clean thing to stand on while I took my daily shower from my Camelback 100 oz unbottle. You might be surprized how little water it takes to take a shower with. I never sought out the showers (and lines) at Philont, but had my own every day.

It also provided me with a clean, smooth and padded surface to sit on while booting up and tending to foot care. I' diabetic and take imaculate care of my feet. They are the only ones I have and I want them to late my lifetime.

It served as a dining room, complete with table and chair since it was big enough for my rumpus to sit on and share it with my food items. Sort of a "spread" if you will.

I thought long and hard about taking it because of the extra weight, but in the end justified it's multi use as a sleeping pad. I have no regrets and would not leave home without it.

As to a three legged camping stool, the only thing I can see it's good for at Philmont is to fall off of. If you can't get down on the ground comfortable without that contraption, then maybe one should rethink going to Philmont.

Where the Crazy Creek excels is giving your back just a little bit of support after a long hard day on the trail. Three legged stools can't offer that. And that little bit of support on your back is what really makes the difference.

I put my Crazy Creek chair right up there in usefullness with my Treks trekking poles. I would not leave home for Philmont without them.

And that's all I know about camp chairs.
