We've been taking Coleman Xponent stoves to Philmont since 2002. these
use only the PowerMax canisters (though they may now have adapters for
others).

Answers to the below:

1) Coleman PowerMax (good to check which TPs have before you leave
basecamp). We've usually taken enough for our whole trek.

2) PowerMax canisters can be punctured when empty and crushed flat.
We've had staffed camps take them as trash.

3) Yes

4) No. No. Tooth of Time Traders had them in stock (as of 2006). No
shipping or air travel for canisters. We ship our stoves ahead, though
our other crew usually packs theirs in checked bags. I'd rather make
sure ours get there. No way of telling what TSA may decide can't go.

One further note, the Xtreme stove are canister liquid-feed as opposed
to almost all other canister stoves (all other canisters?).

We're happy with ours.

Two years ago we took 2 white gas stoves to Philmont, which worked fine.

Since we were flying in, I shipped the stoves by UPS, and bought the gas

at Philmont.

This year, the scouts are talking about wanting to take cannister
stoves. Some questions:

1) Which type of cannister does Philmont sell at the backcountry trading

posts?

2) Will the staffed camps accept empty cannisters as trash?

3) Will headquarters accept empty cannisters as trash?

4) Can we ship full or empty cannisters, or check them on the airline as

luggage?

I'm more interested in answers to these questions, and less interested
in "are white gas stoves better than..." discussions, but who can
control this group :-)

Thanks for your help,
Dave Smith
