[philmont] less he wet his pants

My concern is not with contrary opinions. It's with recognizing that each decision may have adverse consequences. (And wet pants generally dry without adverse consequences to anyone but the scout involved.). I get tired of the rants--some of them remind me of Eric Fromm's 'true believers.'. This is an art, not a science.

If you have a Scout that can't keep his boots laced or pack packed or fuel bottle lid on tight or, or or... then you have more work to do before you sign him up for Philmont.
 
Philmont is not for Tenderfoot Scouts.  It's for those with ehe necessary skills and those who desire to learn even more skills.
 
Learning never stops.
 
Don't hamstring your Scouts by making life so simple, so easy.
 
The only wish I really have is that at Philmont your Scouts could gather wood in the rain, build a cooking fire in the rain, cook over it in the rain and enjoy doing so like we did back in 1959. .
 
There were a LARGE set of values learned from that exercise and you appreciate the meal a whole lot more
 
If you are concerned that a Scout might ruin his pack and clothes because of a loose gas container cap, for Pete's sake, take away his water bottle less he wet his pant

PS  My purpose on this list is to stimulate thinking on advisors parts, not to tell you how to do it.  I am not being personal when I comment on a post, just simply being a contrary old coot who is willing to share a couple of centurys worth of experience with you.
