Steve, I'm not going to be there as late as your trek. But old 31 was one
of my favorites - did it in 03 and 06. Now not so sure about new 24. But
here are a couple of my comments about your itinerary. Crater Lake is one
of my favorite staff camps, it's been replaced by Beaubien. That's okay,
and you get extra commissary pickup at PJ so you don't have to carry as many
days of food as the old 31. The hike from Rayado River Camp to Lookout
Meadow Camp has a good tough uphill, will give you a good wake up call for
what's to come later on. Had a Scout tell me in 03, at end of trek, that he
thought he was going to die on that trail and never make it the rest of the
way, but of course he did. There's a nice 360 panorama photo of my crew
resting after that big uphill, at the mouth of Bonito Canyon, at
http://www.troop116.org/philmont/phl03.htm. Click on the thumbnail 4th row
down, 2nd pix from left. Beautiful valley and meadow areas once you get up.
Your toughest day is probably Beaubien to Shaefers Pass over Black Mtn.
Black Mtn is evil, in my mind, it's quite a climb, and you'll be hauling
water for Shaefers and side hike to the Tooth. Unless you are assured
Shaefers spring is flowing. Hasn't been for last couple years, but this
year is supposed to be better. Really tough day for you guys. Allow 5 hrs
for the sike hike, Shaefers to Tooth and back, and take a minimum of 2 qts
of water each. Cimarroncito to Cimarron River, old 31 had Harlan in
between. Harlan is another one of my favorite staff camps. Too bad, in my
opinion. Black Horse is a crummy trail camp, not a lot of space for flat
ground for tent, but a great location to stage your day for the Baldy Mtn
side hike. Oh, and you get a burro, new to this itinerary. That's another
whole topic that I'll avoid. Enjoy the campfire at Pueblano, usually one of
the better ones.
My crew will be on new Itin 31, was 34, at end of June. We picked it
because it's one of only two itineraries that includes Baldy, Phillips and
the Tooth.
You guys have a great trek. I know you will.

Anyone going at that time?
I see that this trek used to be the famous #31. I think I'm in for a walk.
