I plan to use a display of the patches for recruiting purposes, both within
my troop and for the council contingent. When I display my patches, my
purpose is not to turn each Scout into a patch collector. I really don't
think that's possible unless a Scout attends a Jamboree or a NOAC. Rather, I
try to teach the idea that Scouting is a national movement, and there are
Scouts in every state doing the same things we do in South Jersey. And,
hopefully, all aiming to attend the Summit of Scouting, Philmont Scout
Ranch.
After our 2005 trek, I took the camp patches for each of the camps we
visitied, some Philmont back patches and other patches that matched our trek
along with our customized carabiners from our trek and put them all in a
shadow box for display. It makes for a great souviner of the trek. If I
could have economically found a bigger frame, I'd have put our crew photo in
the center of that. I also considered using the trek map with all the camps
circled (done at CHQ before we started), affixing the patches next to the
camps and making a really big framed display.
I'm really glad they came out with these patches. It adds a nice touch.
