[philmont] some more good news

I'm not sure it's entirely settled, just as the Supreme Court decision on the question as to whether we could require duty to God as a condition of membership did not answer whether the Army had to accommodate such a group, for free. As essentially a private "club", the Supreme Court said we could do what National says we must do re: the gay issue. Did they also say that the Army must accommodate a private club that does what National says we must do? For free?

There was a lot written about this at the time of the 2001 Jamboree, when the Supreme Court's overturning of the decision of the New Jersey Supreme Court (which had ruled we were a "public accommodation") was fresh.

I'm all in favor of what we do do and not much a fan of National's "written in stone" approaches to things we in the field don't find to be much of a problem. Policies, rather than practices, are what spurs these lawsuits. We're all pretty tolerant, as a rule, and each boy is worth individual consideration. As I said in my last post, I hope the combination of National's approach to things as well as the actions of zealots on the other side, none of whom really want to go camping with us (when all is said and done) does not cause us to lose A.P Hill.

When I say do not "really want to go camping with us", I mean to emphasize "camping", with the bugs, latrines, sleeping on the ground, rain etc., etc., etc, rather than "with us", as I have found Scouts to be the most tolerant people on the planet. "With us" is pretty good, if you can handle what Mother Nature throws at you.

If I hear anything, I'll let you and the group know.
