[philmont] bear whistles

I had a good laugh over John's comment about "bear whistles".

In the vicinity of Glacier National Park, they sold "bear bells" and even a hiking stick festooned with bells that would make it sound like Kris Kringle was coming down the trail.

As I'm sure you all realize, the purpose of a loud whistle on the trail is for those situations where, despite all of your teaching and shakedowns, a couple of Scouts get way out ahead of the pack and need to be brought up short, or if someone on the tail end of the line has an injury or just needs to stop.

I'm definitely going to take my Philmont whistle on my July Adirondack canoe trek, where Scouts think that just because they're in sight, it's ok. A blast of the whistle means hold up and group up.

We do have some queer habits here "down Jersey" (where the Jersey Devil roams the piney woods at night), but "bear whistles" isn't one of them.
