Bill: Don't know if you realized, but you are replying to the whole list on
some of your personal messages - to me, and perhaps to Mike.
Yes, the mouth of Greenwood Canyon is 8,244 ft elev (that's what the
benchmark at the mouth said in 1998) and Copper Park is approx 10,500 ft.
elev. (depending on the exact spot you measure it). So yes, Copper is
higher than the mouth of Greenwood Canyon.
But to clarify, I thought you were talking about the last section of the
trail, from the saddle above Copper Park at 11,450 ft. elev. down into
Copper Park camp. That's a 950 foot drop. That's where there is a new
trail that just opened last July. It replaced a very treacherous trail (if
you could even call it a trail) that went straight down and was quite
hazardous. The new trail has lots of switchbacks. That's also what I
thought Mike was referring to when your answer to him came on the List, but
it was hard to tell since his original message to you was absent. So that's
why I emailed you off-list, to check with you privately and get
clarification.
I received new maps from ToTT a few weeks ago. I noticed that this new
trail, oddly, is not shown on the section maps, neither the Valle map nor
the North Country map. It is, however, shown on the Overall map. This new
trail can be seen at http://www.troop116.org/philmont, click on Reference
Material-General, item #8.
Bill you are quite correct on what's up and what's down. But sometimes it
depends on the scope of what you're referring to.

Subject: [philmont] tooth of time traders
Mike Conkey asked if the sector maps I received the other day from Tooth of
Time traders showed the new trail from Greenwood Canyon camp to Copper Park.
Julian Love questioned my description as being uphill between the two camps.
I said I'd check the map when I got home.
Rock Rohrbacker's Philmanac lists Greenwood Canyon camp at 8300 feet and
Copper Park at 10,480. The contour lines on the map bear that out. It is
definitely uphill from Greenwood Canyon Camp to Copper Park, and the trail
is shown on the new Valle Vidal sector maps.

Bill Sheehan
