WOW!! Thankd for the great advice guys!! Those are all much better suggestions! I had completely forgotten that Shaefer's is famous for being 'semi-dry' and water will definitely be an issue on the last day going from NFU to Base over the Tooth (and yes, we will be planning to climb the Tooth and with Shaefer's peak only about 300 to 400 feet higher than the trail, there's no reason not to at least 'run' up it.) One of the 'program features' that my mostly 14 & 15 year old crew selected was 'climing the most peaks' so I'm trying to accomodate that in my initial planning so that all the options can be readily available for suggestion if needed on the trail. From what you have all said, we will definitely be staying at North Fork Urraca in order to #1 'camel up' before heading up the trail and #2 make sure our water reserves are appropriate for the 10 or 11 mile hike in the last day.
Looking at my poster/map, another option would be to side hike Black Mountain on the layover day and then take the Trail Peak-Fowler Pass-Crater-Miner's-NFU route on day 11. We hiked from Agua Fria into Crater Lake via Webster and Fowler passes, it would be cool on this trip to hike the loop from Beaubien to Fish then through Webster pass and up Carson Meadows back to Beaubien (it looks like there is a trail along the western slope above Carson Meadows or the 4WD road up the bottom of the meadow.) Some of the most striking views we had were dropping down into the meadow and then coming through Fowler Pass to see the Tooth. So there are 2 really good options for the layover day at Beaubien. I'm not sure if the guys will be interested in partaking of the horse ride at Beaubien, the guys in 2003 wanted it as part of the trip but the guys in this crew were only marginally interested. If they decide not to do the ride, it opens up the hiking options on layover day quite a bit.
On another note, other than Crooked Creek - homesteading, what are program options at Porcupine and/or on the trip from Clear Creek to Porcupine? (I'd love to get into Porky early on that day to try and get the same campsite we had there in 2003, it was (I think) the main area, between the river and the trail just before the crossing.)
What a shining example of how great this list can be for handing down information from the Phil-sperts (Philmont experts) to those of us with just enough Philmont experience to be dangerous!!!
Thanks again to all for the advice!
