[philmont] bear whistles ... the other side

This is the other side to the "whistle" story...

We took the scouts on a cross country hike in Armstrong Redwoods State
Reserve (Northern California). We used compasses, a map, and estimated
our paces.

On our way back, dusk was settling in, and, by our figuring, we were
close to camp. Each of us pointed in the direction we thought the camp
was. Then, using our Motorola radios, we called those in camp (who had
not come on the hike) and asked them to blow their whistles, so we could
see who was closest to the correct direction.

They blew and blew, but we could not hear them. We asked them to honk
the car horns... still not a peep. We blew our whistles, and they
couldn't hear a thing.

So, we set off in our best guess of the correct direction, and stumbled
into camp in less than 200 yards! We were 200 yards from camp and could
not hear a car horn or whistle!

Of course, that was in the middle of a Redwood forest. Over water or
other open areas those whistles probably work just fine.

Your mileage may vary,
