I'm a little out of touch, but in 2001 the South Ponil was reintroduced with
the native Rio Grande Cutthroat trout. Some did survive after the fire, and
I believe they restocked more in later years. I haven't heard much lately,
but this was a neat program. That might be one stream to practice only
catch and release!
If you have a spare moment in base camp, search out Doug Palmer (Assoc. Dir
of Program, Unit 5) or Johnny Ulibarri at the Backcountry Warehouse. Both
are avid fisherman. (And Doug spearheaded the reintroduction of the native
trout.
