[philmont] black mountain

Al mentioned Black Mountain. Truly a peak that gives you a sense of accomplishment when you get there. I've only ascended it on the traverse from Red Hills to Shaeffer's (over Big Red). It's a long day, and no water at Shaeffer's can be a pain. Ascending it from the Shaeffer's side would probably be fine. From what I've heard, going up from the Black Mountain camp side is a grind. All of this is no surprise to Al, just putting it out for others.

That's one of the neat things about Autumn Adventures, you design your own hikes. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED program for those seeking to recharge their Scouting batteries.

When our guide got back to base, and told the other guides that an "All-Adult" crew had traversed from Red Hills to Shaeffers, summitting Black, they said "Adults did that?". Another neat thing about Autumn Adventure, just as you can choose to take a hike like that with full packs, you also can choose not to. You're not bound to an itinerary choice you made by postcard under the urging of some 15 or 16 year olds. For some reason, when you extol the virtues of backpacking to the youth, they get the idea that you can backpack them under the table. How soon they find out the truth of that myth.

I'm thinking of the stunned faces and the murmured observation "But you're a grown-up", when the myth collapses. Not a bad idea to hit the stair-stepper now, while there's still time.

All for now.
