Well, its not like they haven't been warned!
WRT the apparent need for WFAB or equivalent east of the Rockies, I
respectfully disagree. Something beyond "Call 911 and keep the patient
calm" is needed anywhere you are distant from a quick response by EMS.
In our part of Texas, many of our popular state parks are 30 to 45
minutes from a town, and many of those would likely not have a EMT
service similar to what many of us have come to expect. And in many
circumstances that could be encountered on a "normal" Scout activity, 30
to 45 minutes could literally be a lifetime!
Like you said, you still have another year, and as many of us in
Scouting are fond of saying - If not you, who? If not now, when?
Happy Trails,
Roy Fisher
The reason it was moved from '07 to '08 was to give time to Councils to
come up with a solution for the fact that most Councils east of the
Rockies have had little need for Wilderness 1st Aid. That doesn't mean I
disapprove of the idea, quite the contrary. Having an up-close and
personal experience with the Med Staff at Philmont, made me appreciate
the fact that every member of my '06 Crew had basic FA/CPR training
before we left. Had our situation been more serious, more intense
knowledge may have been required. Luckily, it wasn't serious, but it
could have been.
Unfortunately, I doubt that much has changed in the last year. In St
Louis, a little talk, but hardly any
action. The local Red Cross chapter still doesn't a WFA course scheduled
in the foreseeable future. Neither does GSLAC. Granted, we still have
another year to figure it out, but as a former ASM once told me,
"There's no minute like the LAST minute!!"
