Steve: I follow the guidelines of the Philmont Guidebook to Adventure that
recommends external frame packs have at least 4,000 cu. In. and internal
frame packs have at least 4,800 cu. in. Then I check Cooper Wright's
Philmont Advisor's Guide, available from Coop for a small donation to his
Venturing Crew (it's their fundraiser), written by experienced advisors and
has multitudes of advice on many Philmont prep topics. Then I tell my crews
that if the pack is the appropriate size and is over 2/3 full with personal
gear, there's reasons for concern. Crew gear, with 4 days of provisions,
can stress the limits. Sounds like you've got the cu. in. in the packs you
describe, but maybe there is more personal gear than is needed. Check the
Personal Equipment list in the Guidebook to Adventure on pages 15 & 16 and
see if unnecessary gear is being added. It will work out. It will. Julian

I started to pack today for a weekend practice run.
I have an Aether 85 @ 5200 c.i. and my son has a Kelty Coyote @ 4750 c.i.
Boy, let me tell you - the gear barely fits! His 20 degree GoLite sleeping
bag fills up nearly the entire compartment. As far as mine, it is crammed to
the top and we both have wittled the list to bare essentials. There are no
luxury items. I realize that the two of us are carrying gear that would
normally be divided up, but there is no other room. Literally busting at the
seams. I can see no way that 3 days worth of food could also be packed in
there.
We have compression sacks on the bags and on the clothes. Our other weeklong
trips to the AT & Isle Royale didn't seem to be this filling.
Without starting a discussion on internal vs. external frame packs, what
have you guys done?
