You must have something out of whack. Would be glad to help if I can - maybe off line would be better so that we don't get chastised for having something that the self appointed Philmont Gods don't approve of. For our Co-ed Venturing Crew going to Philmont this summer, we have had 2 shakedowns already. Several of the kids and the Female advisor have Alps Mountaineering Cascades at 5200 ci and one of the girls has the Kelty Coyote at 4750 ci. She also has a very large sleeping bag. Hers is pretty stuffed but everyone else's is full but comfortable. Some even have full length Z-rests on the inside of the pack. Of course when they have 4 days worth of food instead of a weekends worth, the Z-rest will probably have to go on the outside.

I started to pack today for a weekend practice run.
I have an Aether 85 @ 5200 c.i. and my son has a Kelty Coyote @ 4750 c.i.
Boy, let me tell you - the gear barely fits! His 20 degree GoLite sleeping
bag fills up nearly the entire compartment. As far as mine, it is crammed to
the top and we both have wittled the list to bare essentials. There are no
luxury items. I realize that the two of us are carrying gear that would
normally be divided up, but there is no other room. Literally busting at the
seams. I can see no way that 3 days worth of food could also be packed in
there.
We have compression sacks on the bags and on the clothes. Our other weeklong
trips to the AT & Isle Royale didn't seem to be this filling.
Without starting a discussion on internal vs. external frame packs, what
have you guys done?
