[philmont] Wilderness First Aid IS REQUIRED in 2008 and beyond

Steve

Understand your ranting, but if your council is proactive, you can
significantly reduce the costs of the WFA training. Our entire Venturing Crew
qualified every two years in WFA. By the way, I don't consider WFA as training, I
view it as insurance. When I am in the backcountry with a group of young
people, I want to know that I am as prepared as possible, that I understand the
risks involved and I have taken every step possible to either eliminate or
minimize them. To be perfectly honest, I am shocked that BSA allows adults to
take young folks into the backcountry without any sort of training or
preparation. The current BSA adult training doesn't even begin to scratch the
surface in teaching the skills needed by a trek leader. Not to take a shot at Wood
Badge (I'm a good old Bob White), but adults will pay much more for Wood
Badge training than any WFA course.

Volunteer leaders are "being stuck" with this requirement, because they are
the ones who are on the scene when something happens and someone needs help.
Even at Philmont with all its radios and trained search and rescue training
for its staff, it still can take hours to get help. If you had a young
person that was hurt, are you ready to provide care for an extended time, with the
materials you have on your back, in a non-healthy environment?
