[philmont] Backpacks, what's inside

Greetings Roy,

In 1965 I rolled my sleeping bag to form a long tube (rolled from the side
along the whole length of the bag), tied it at several places along the
length of the tube to keep it from coming apart, put my ground cloth around
the tube and tied the sleeping bag/ground cloth to the "D" rings on my BSA
Yucca pack.

This kept the bag dry and out of the inside of the pack.

How this might play out on a modern backpack I don't know but the above
allowed me to attach the sleeping bag with a plastic outer layer which kept
the bag dry. The sleeping bag rolled up length wise was bent into the shape
of a horseshoe and tied to the Yucca pack.

The Yucca pack was attached to a frame and by using the frame belt it was
possible ot keep the load off of my shoulders (mostly :-) ).

The one thing that really worked well in my 1965 trek was to have a pair of
really great hiking boots. Had to stop once or twice to remove a pebble or
two, but the boots were broken in well and kept my feet comfortable over
some gravelly terrain, most notably near the Tooth of Time.

I also took with me a large number of pairs of socks, and found it really
helped my feet to change these frequently. The socks would get wet from
sweat and changing socks frequently dealt with that issue.

There is more than one way to skin a cat, but the above worked very well for
me back in the days when dinosaurs roamed the earth.
