[philmont] Backpacks, what's inside

6-32 oz Nalgenes seems a bit over-kill, although hydration is real important
and maybe your trek has several dry camps. My comment is use 1-qt or 2-qt
Platypus collapsibles. I've used them for years with never a leak. I
prefer the pop-up (as well as screw-on) top instead of the screw-on (only)
top - easier to drink from.

The collapsibles are lighter and fit into odd places way better than
Nalgenes. Of course when you only have 3 of them full (which would be
adequate for most days), they'll take up less than 1/2 the room of 6
Nalgenes.

You may have too many warm clothes, also. The underwear, fleece pants, and
rainpants won't all be worn at once (it isn't usually that cold at 10K' in
June-Aug), and it warms during daytime (unlike Michigan in winter where the
day peaks at 20 F). Plan wearing raingear if you're cold and that might
make it unnecessary to take along one layer.

The other folks responding had good ideas too so I won't duplicate.

Well here goes,

The sleeping bags, which are new, are my first 20 degree bags for
Backpacking. A GoLite Fly and a Mountainsmith Recon they are very light. I
have a Prolite 4 pad and my son has a Z-Rest.

As far as personal gear 1 zip-off pant, 1 rain pant, 1 rain jacket, 4 socks,

2 shirts, 1 underwear, wool hat, silk underwear (It is still cold here in
MI), Fleece jacket, fleece pants, & wool mittens.

Camp gear is a pot, Dragonfly, gas bottle, lighter, water filter, 6-32 oz
Nalgene cantenes, 2 person Sierra Designs Tent, Food for 2 days, & TP.

I also have a tri-pod seat, hiking poles, spork, mug, head lamp. My son has
a Crazy Creek chair but no hiking poles.

I think that is about it. The only thing missing is the Tarp, & rope and I
can't even think about packing them this time.

The big thing is we are not used to such a large bag. I even got compression

bags for them to reduce size. Summer here can be quite humid and warm where
a blanket is generally enough. My bag takes up the entire lower compartment
where I would store the tent. I don't like to roll the tent up each time, I
would just stuff it in a stuff sack. I am going to try to wrap the bag
around the pack.

That's what these shakedowns are for right? We are doing shakedowns with the

crew also where we can spread the crew equipment around.

Thanks,

Steve

I think Steve listing what is in his pack is a great idea. It may be
helpful for many of us and we may even find it entertaining. If one of
the the other e-mail lists I belong to can have over one hundred posts
one what type of oil is best for your motorcycle, I think we could help
Steve sort his gear.
I would like to thank the "gurus" on this list that regularly answer
our questions and share their knowledge. I'm not naming names but I
think you know who you are. Thank you.
