I was reading this thread and a thought occurred that I thought I might
share. I saw the equipment list that included "Nalgene with duct tape" and I
remembered the thread from a year or two ago which beat to death whether or
not duct tape was a smellable and how putting it on a Nalgene means that the
Nalgene has to go in the bear bag every night. I won't go there now and let
that issue lie dead where it belongs, but I will share what I did for our
crew.
You know all those annoying plastic 'credit card' like things you get in
the junk mail? They come as temporary ID's, membership cards, and other
stuff until "you get your permanent card". I hate those things, it's such a
waste and they all go in the land fill. Well, anyway, they are very thin and
cheap with no weight to speak of (yes, I know everything has weight), so I
saved a bunch of them. As it turns out, they are just a tad wider than
standard duct tape. So I took a roll of the tape and wrapped about six feet
of duct tape around each card. Because the card is nicely rectangular, it is
quite easy to get the tape on very neatly and even at the edges with a
little practice. They were flat and neat and very easy to get the tape back
off of. I gave one or two to each crew member, and with little effort we had
just about a whole roll of duct tape spread out between the crew. Worked
like a charm, the crew thought it was a neat idea, and many started making
their own when they got home. You don't have the problem of a [possible]
smellable on your water bottle, you don't expose the tape to water and dirt
all the time, and the darn thing slips into any corner of the pack you like.
It's a nice little thing you can do with the crew at one of your planning
meetings or whatever. I made these for the crew because my son and I were
guests of this group, and didn't know them very well. It allowed us to give
them something at the Ranger shakedown at Philmont to show that we were
trying to be a useful part of the team. I gave the Ranger a couple also, he
thought it was a neat idea. And yes, they did get used more than I expected.
Your mileage may vary.
Happy Hiking,
Tom
