I recall reading something about a scientific phenomenon of vapor pressure where the body drives the moisture away, up and through permeable layers. It is discussed either in the current or immediately prior edition of the Fieldbook in the context of constructing a sleepsack of open celled foam, wrapped by a "de-icing sheet" that would allow one to sleep outdoors in sub-zero weather without a tent or conventional sleeping bag.
It may also be discussed the the BSA manual of winter camping titled "Okpik".
