I've read the other replies and will give my own. For years I carried a pair of gore-tex Etonic running shoes as camp shoes. Loved them. They were heavy though. Then I got a pair of Crocs.
(insert laughter here)
I took the Crocs on our Spring Break backpack this year. Now, I am a fairly big guy - 6'0" and 220 pounds - and I hiked about 4 miles of the trail in my Crocs just because I got tired of taking my boots off for every stream crossing. They were amazing! I felt one rock through the soles in those miles. If you'd asked me before March 2007 if I'd backpack in them, I'd have said no. But I know from personal experience that if you have a boot blowout, they will get you from the trail to the next camp with no problem. I have other things to say about boot blow-outs, but that is for another thread...
I am convinced the Crocs are good enough. They are going on the CDT with me in July...
We have quite a few of the youth that carry Crocs now. The only thing we require is that when their name comes up as "cook" on the duty roster, they put their boots back on as the Crocs have holes in them and boiling water would leave a cute design on the top of their feet.
