The discussion I recalled earlier as being contained in the older Fieldbook can be found at p 343-347 in the 3rd Edition.In those pages, details of a below zero sleep system made from one inch low density foam. This system is said to allow sleeping out of doors in subzero conditions without a tent or conventional sleeping bag.
The phenomenon of vapor pressure from the body does exist, and will dry clothing if the outer bag is sufficiently permeable. This may well work with low density foam, but may not be true of the bag you bring to the ranch, particularly if the outer shell is somewhat waterproof.
If you have the old book, take a peek for photos of something you won't believe works.
