The AFA is very sticky about access, post 9/11. They re-did some of the
base fences and I believe the Scout campground is now outside the fence (as
is the visitor center, chapel, etc.). To get access INSIDE the fence, you
need some with a military ID card. To be 100% accurate (my info is mostly
hearsay, but we do only live 70 miles away), call the base public affairs
office (you can get the number via the web) and ask.... Past treks have
also been put up at the very scenic Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch, which is
the main Denver Area Council camp located in the Black Forest, about 1/2
way between Denver and Colorado Springs. If anyone is intersted in this
option, I can give you the Council contact person. YIS. Mike Conkey ('76,
'02, '04 and '07).

In 05 our Troop did the same thing, and flew into the Springs. They opted
to spend a day touring the Air Force Academy. (The Crew Advisor was retired
AF) and I believe they bunked at the Academy for one night before heading
on to other activities prior to arriving at Philmont.

Our contingent of 4 crews will be flying into Colorado Springs on our way
to Philmont in July. We are planning a number of sightseeing activities
in and around CS the day before we report to Philmont. We are thinking
about camping at Camp Falcon on the Ft Carson base. Has anyone camped
their before and if so would you recommend it? Any other suggestions are
welcome as well. Thanks
