Mark -

You're on the right track with your son; mooching is a useful ultralight
backpacking
technique. :-) I did the Skyline-to-the-Sea trail last year with my son
and he
carried the bear can (no bears, just squirrels and raccoons). He
volunteered
and I didn't object.

As for carrying fewer clothes,
(a) don't carry more clothes than you can wear at one time - what's the
point of
carrying more?
(b) Wear wool underwear, it's surprisingly comfortable and doesn't stink at
all
compared to synthetics. I've talked to a person who claimed a wool base
layer can
be acceptably oder-free at 20+ days of hiking - and I believe him.
(c) carry stuff that dries easily
(d) carry lightweight rain gear, so your clothes don't get soaked.

I wear hiking shoes that have large mesh panels (i.e great ventilation),
wool socks, and
very light polypropylene sock liners. I take the socks off at night and let
them
air out but I wear the sock liners continuously for at least 3 days. I've
not felt
a need to wash my socks at the 3 day mark, which is the longest trip I've
been able to take so far. I don't understand why so many people feel the
need
to wash their socks so often.
