[philmont] Trekking poles and mistakes made

The Makalu version by Leki have angled cork grips w/ springs and collapse
for air travel. The cork, IMO, massively reduces blistering and seems to be
not as hot as the black rubber. The angle is better, too, to reduce the
strain on the wrists. Spring-loaded upper joints are necessary for anyone
over 40. Without the springs, they're just glorified hiking sticks. I back
packed with 1 pole for eleven years, pooh-poohing the technical, 2 hiking
poles as being for the sick, lame, & lazy. Then, I read where Collin
Fletcher (the backpacking guru who taught many of us), and who felt the same
way I did, agreed to try a couple on a dare. He reported he was amazed at
the difference. He took them home and climbed up on his bathroom scale to
learn, to his amazement, that the pole took 8-10 lbs off each step. He
instantly became a convert; and so did I. I've used them for ten years and
like the others, won't leave home without them.
