Got to admit that while I have looked at the Field Guide, I don't have one and my summer crews have not carried it, since while I am interested a little, I am not interested enough. There may have been a copy or two in the backpacks of some of the AA adults...
But at the end of the article about the Field Guide was a nugget I was thrilled to see:
"Dave is also working on a new edition of the Philmont Trails book which was last published in 1974. The purpose of Philmont Trails is, to enable Philmont participants to locate observe, protect and learn the significance of historical, cultural, natural, geological and scenic points of interest throughout areas frequently traveled by Philmont participants. "
I first ran across Philmont Trails when we started collecting documents for the PEAKS/TREKS project. It is a wonderful book, with linear maps of the major trails and descriptions of what you see along the way. There are four versions posted in the Philmont documents archive (http://philmontdocs.watchu.org/itineraries.htm) - the first is not called "Philmont Trails", the second is is an update to include the acquistion of Baldy, and we've got the last dated after 1974. Dating early Philmont documents is a challenge since most do not have any indication at all of when they were printed. But that's another story...
I have commented before that the Philmont GIS project should allow for "Trails" to be updated and republished. I am glad to see that is happening, and I will buy (and carry) a copy of it when it is available. Or at least copies of the pages relevant to the part of the ranch I will be in.
