[philmont] Ranger Training

I would add two comments to this and other replies.

1. With regards to specific skills, I was surprised at how little I knew
about map reading and orientation. Us flatlanders do not have a
challenging terrain with regards to both knowing various symbols and
with orienting in a mountainous terrain. Here's a link to some map
symbol flash cards which would be helpful to go over prior to arriving.
) They can be used in patrol contests with the crew teaching the younger
boys, strengthening their knowledge along the way. I was surprised how
difficult it is to orient a map in mountainous terrain. You would think
that it would be easy but it takes some time to learn how to distinguish
one mountain from another. We continually over-estimated our progress at
the beginning of our trek until we gained some navi-guesser experience.
BTW, switching off each day slows down the overall learning curve... be
patient.

2. PMA - Positive Mental Attitude. The check-in process at Base Camp
becomes a drag. After months of anticipation the boys end up spending a
great deal of time sitting around at the various check in stations.
During this time the ranger will focus on Ranger training to make use of
the time. The boys start to become antsy with trail fever and get
slightly ambivalent towards more bear safety training. Warn them in
advance and encourage them to be as responsive and gung-ho as possible.
Remember, the ranger has to repeat this over-and-over during the summer
so I'm sure it's even less exciting for him or her. The more attentive
and positive the crew is, the happier everyone will be.

The boys in our contingent crews have 2, possibly 3, shakedown
trips before leaving for the ranch on June 15th and they tell me they
really want to impress their Rangers. Does anyone have an outline of
the points the Rangers must cover during Ranger Training?
