My 2 cents about field guides and backpacking at PSR. I live in the St. Louis suburbs and to tell the truth we see more critters here in town than I've seen on 3 treks, haven't seen a bear in either locale and have seen a bobcat, fox, coyote, etc here. I suspect the semi-arid country accounts for the parsity of animals, birds and reptiles but the plant life is different and noteworthy. I have several laminated fold out guides for birds, plants and wildflowers for the Midwest, I bet there are those same kinds of guides for New Mexico - check the 'net for local and state botantical societys and wildflower clubs. These guides weigh nothing and take up little room. Cameras can record and you can look up later, we learned a lot about cactus after we returned.
