[philmont] Using a hat as a target

Pete usually has good comments. I've just never seen a hat shot on the range that wasn't blown apart, but then nothing is always true except gravity works (cleaned up version of ancient rock climbing wisdom). I guess kids can always buy another hat when they get back to base camp but the loss of a real piece of trail gear to me is the issue. Paper targets as an option seems pretty reasonable.

I think I know where you're coming from on this. A crew shows up at Black Powder shooting and has no targets to shoot at. The staff suggests shooting at their hats, but the guys just spent good money at Tooth of Time Traders to buy them just a few days earlier. Bottom line: The Black Powder staff should provide paper targets instead.

  My take:
Maybe they ought to have paper targets as an option, but shooting one's hat is a lot like branding boots. It's a great way to remember the trek.

My 50 caliber shot-riddled Philmont hat hangs in my office as a fond memory of our trek in 2005. And I wasn't the only one to shoot holes in it. No sooner had I wrapped up my turn, I looked out at my hat and saw it swinging from my son and one other boy hitting it with their well-placed shots. I still wore it the rest of the trek.
