We added as much program as we could last year (including a couple of evening jaunts for advisor's coffee). We were on itinerary 28. It pushed our trek to 106 base miles, but we NEVER got shut out of program. BUT, on the popular programs (shooting and rock climbing, mainly), be there as early as you can and don't be surprised if they schedule you for program early the next day. On the evening of our first night on the trail, we hiked from Dean Cutoff to Pueblano for logger ball and campfire. Then we hiked back to camp (with our ranger) in the dark. While at Pueblano (which was not on our itinerary), we signed up for spar pole climbing at 10 AM the next day. We got up early, backpacked to Pueblano, did spar pole climbing (which was one of trip highlights, program-wise) and then hiked across Wilson Mesa to Rich Cabins. It was a long (and hot) day climbing the mesa and descending on that stupid logging road, but we were still at Rich Cabins in time to get the porch talk about LNT before dinner. BUT, when we got to Pueblano at 10 AM, they were filling spar pole sessions for very late in the afternoon already. If you got there after lunch, I would guess they would be full up for that day.
Just go over the maps before you get to Philmont and have some "extra program" possibilities in mind. Then run them by your ranger. We thought about adding Indian Writings the first day, depending on how early the bus could take us to our drop off (we were mostly Phil-veterans). The ranger talked our crew out of it. Said the program was OK, but not worth a 7 mile hike. We listened to his sage advice and when we met up with one of our other Council contingent crews, they also said the program was OK, but nothing earth-shattering. On the other hand, the logger ball and campfire at Pueblano (the Ranger recommendation), were enjoyed by all. YIS. Mike Conkey ('76, '02, '04 and '07).
