Jon,
?
All I can say about dining flies is weight weight weight.
You need two for a full crew. And every decision you make regarding equipment between now and the Welcome Center that has to do with equipment will involve weight. Having made those decisions I can tell you you will breath a sigh of relief on the trail for every time you choose the lighter piece of crew gear. That is not to say you forget quality and go for a cheap set of rain gear or a cheap dining fly. But given a choice of quality and weight I would always go for the lighter gear. Some day on your trek every one?can have their "dog day" and you will pass off some of their crew gear to a stronger hiker that day. Each time you do you will be glad you choose the lighter item. There are plenty of things you cannot change i.e. food and water, so make the smart choices now while you are home and still have choices.
Good luck and enjoy the trek.

Included with the tarp, you need poles (use trekking poles), stakes and rope. If using the Philmont tarp, check the tarp and attached ropes before leaving the supply area.
