I agree with Larry. Except where you are coming to a dry camp, you rarely
need to carry
more than two liters.
However, you need the capacity, so 4 nalgenes per person is about right.
But some can be empty :-) Collapsible water bottles can save bulk, though,
and that can be important immediately following a four day food pickup.
I am not aware of any first days that are either long or dry, so 4 liters
out of
base camp seems QUITE excessive. Add water as food is consumed, since
a meal for two weighs almost as much as a full nalgene.
Remember, Philmont supplied food is very heavy compared to what a well-
planned backpack should be carrying. Philmont gear is *extremely* heavy
compared to what a well-planned backpack should be carrying. Deal with
it. It is just unfortunate that Philmont, specializing in backpacking,
doesn't.
