[philmont] Drying the water bag

I like your idea of sterilizing the bags as a precaution BEFORE the trip -
especially scouts were relied upon to sterilize the bag after the last trip.
If one needed or wanted to save Micro pure, beach would work just as well I
would think.

Yes, camelbaks have the advantage of being easier to clean due to their
larger openings. But the last time I weighed them, they were considerably
heavier than other bags (I use platypus). I carry to Aquapure (bottled
water) bottle to help with filtering/purifying water (and to use around
camp).

I really only want Camelbaks on my crew. Much easier to fill thru the top
of the bag or fill by pumping thru the tube. I have watch those Plataspills
guys tiring to be filled. They miss more than they get in the bag. Might
just be the guys I have seen tiring to fill their bags.

What I ask them to do is make a bleach solution and let sit in the bag &
tube. Let it sit for a hour or so. Drain thru the tube. Use the coat
hanger trick to spread them out to dry. I ask them to remove the tube from
the bag. They have a ram rod to run thru it, we just use a small dow rod.

The one thing I haven't seen anyone else do or talk about is to purify the
bag when you are getting ready to go on the trail. What I ask my people to
do is to line up and walk by me and I drop a Micro pure in the bag. Ask
them to pour a nalgene of water into the bag, burp the bag to get the air
out of the bag & the tube. Let them sit for 30 minutes plus. Then drain
thru the tube. Then fill with the tap water at the Welcome Center. This
way I know the bag was clean when we left base camp. I'm very sure there
will be some to say that's not necessary and those who will say that we just
wasted Micro pure. Well that's their thoughts and I have mine. Just
haven't had any one sick from not getting the water bag clean and clean
water. For the most part they have always wanted to pump instead of fill
nalgens and drop a tablet in and wait 30 minute.

Your pack may vary,
