The amount of food we were given was more than the crew could eat. We were a
crew of 11 and even after opting to cook only 5 of our 6 supper packs we still
had an over abundance of food most evenings. Most every day we were dumping
excess food at any staff camp that would take it, especially drink mix, meal
bars and crackers. Everyone was sick of crackers.
One comment on the drink mixes. Our Ranger thought he was clever by
demonstrating how you could pour drink powder into your mouth then flush it down
with a gulp of water. This soon became a total clothes and ground contaminating
nightmare after he left us. We band all further use of this practice after I
caught several of my crew casually walking around the campsite and the tents
doing this.
Our Ranger never instructed us to check for trash under rocks or logs. This was
only mentioned to us on day 6 when we hit Beaubien. Our Ranger also allowed our
Scouts to change into their night clothes in their tents. He never mandated
changing outside the tent.
Clustering tents at a safe distance away from the Bearmuda Triangle was
impossible at many of our camps because of the orientation of the sump, bear
cable and fire ring to the available tenting space. Our Ranger only
acknowledged that fact and told us to do the best we could with what we had to
work with. The hardest camps we had to work with were Old Abreau, Black
Mountain, Crags and Lambert's Mine. Lambert's Mine was the absolute worst for
campsite set-up and broke all the rules. It was odd though, when we were at
Cimmeroncito the staff came by that evening to check our campsite and commented
that we had our tents pitched too far away from the triangle.
We left Clarks Fork loaded with 5+ quarts of water per crew member for our
evening at Shafers Pass. We dumped our evening supper in favor of eating our
next days trail lunch for supper, and woke early enough to side hike the Tooth
and hit Base Camp by 9:30 AM. No problems, everyone had about a half a quart of
water when we hit Base Camp.
