While technically I am making all of this up, its based on historical
experience with the public water policy in NM.

I am nearly certain that this is more of a NM State Water Dept imposed rule.

Despite the fact that the Ranch is a privately held piece of land, the fact
that it serves the public makes it beholden to the kind of rules that a gas
station or a public gym might have concerning plumbing and sanitation.

Since Polar Pure (crystalized iodine) is a chemical I bet the NM water
people place a higher value on its ability to purify water than the
mechanical means of a filter. FYI all the Backcountry camps use swimmng
pool chlorine to purify that water and monitor it daily.

I have heard that they are now replacing the old system of waste water from
staffed camps with septic systems and leach fields. Yikes!
