RE: [Philmont]: First Aid requirements

One person in the crew must be certified in CPR and First Aid. For American
Red Cross, 2 cards are required, one for Adult CPR and the other for First
Aid. I am an American Red Cross Instructor and Philmont accepted my
instructor's certification. For medical Doctors, they still need to be
certified in CPR which may be an on job annual event for them anyway. Their
medical license is accepted for the first aid part.

One year while teaching some of the Baltimore Contingent, a Doctor of
Vetinary Science attended. When I handed out his first aid card I asked him
why he needed this? He responded, "In my profession, when there is
something wrong, we kill them.".

The treks book lists other certifications that are accepted.

Hope this helps,

Subject: [Philmont]: First Aid requirements

Does anyone know exactly what the requirements are for leaders (and/or
youth) having first aid certification for a Philmont trek. (2003 trek)

What certifications are accepted. We are sending a Podiatrist. Will the
that qualify for certification? Will I need to call Philmont to verify
that or will we need to send her to first aid training just to cover
ourselves?

We will be starting to look at all of the certifications that adults need
and schedule whatever classes are needed this fall. There are no Red Cross
Wilderness First Aid classes offered in our area. (At least our local
chapter does not know of any in northern Indiana.)
