What is the correct protocol if you do contaminate a container? We dropped
the spigot off of our 5 gallon collapsible in a creek. We ended up by treating
about 2.5 gallons in the jug, and then letting it flow out over the spigot threads.
 No one got sick, but were we thorough enough?

Sounds like you did the equivalent of bleeding the threads of a nalgene, which
would be the procedure short of immersing the item in boiling water.

By the way, during Ranger Training (where, of course, the crew is shown how
to bleed the threads of a nalgene) we have been told that impure water can cause
sickness weeks after contact...
