Bleeding the nalgene is why we decided to try what we did. And I do now
remember that part of the ranger training this happened about june 25th, so
I guess we've got a few weeks to go.
By the way, the scout that dropped the top used that as his "thorn" for the
day as he apologized to the crew.

Sounds like you did the equivalent of bleeding the threads of a nalgene,
which
would be the procedure short of immersing the item in boiling water.
By the way, during Ranger Training (where, of course, the crew is shown how
to bleed the threads of a nalgene) we have been told that impure water can
cause
sickness weeks after contact...
