RE: [Philmont]: Water treatment

This may be a re-hit on an old issue.......but........I feel it needs to be re-told. If you boil water for purification......it needs to be boiled for a full ten minutes, not just brought to a boil. This would seem to use a lot more fuel than most crews would care to carry.

1. Polar pure is supplied by Philmont.

2. Polar pure is brought on the trail in the event that your filter clogs.
There are rangers who teach that after you filter, polar pure should be
used.

3. Polar pure is a bottle that contains iodine crystals that when water is
added to the bottle, creates liquid iodine for water purification. Polar
pure tastes much better than the old iodine tablets.

4. Rangers teach that water for cooking that will be brought to a boil does
not need to be treated. However, as an advisor, be very, VERY careful that
your deserts that require COLD water do NOT accidently get rehydrated with
unpure water.

Great Questions,

Subject: [Philmont]: Water treatment

>From Bob Klein's report...

"Polar Pure - You have to take Polar Pure (1 bottle for each pair of
trekkers) whether you want or need it or not. No ifs, ands, or buts...."

My questions:

* is polar pure supplied by Philmont ?

* is use of polar pure meant to supplement filtering or to replace
filtering ?

* what exactly is polar pure (my guess is iodine) ?

* water used for cooking, which will be boiled -- must that be 'treated'
first also, or is the boiling itself considered adequate treatment ?

Thanks, Larry
