Coop,
Seems to me, legend or no, the temps listed in the article were extremely high.....almost high enough to melt steel. Have boiling points raised since I graduated? Used to be 212F and 100C, adjusting, of course for elevation differences. "Levity pholks, Coop knows me, kind of, and my extreme, to say the least, sense of 'humor' "!

Boiling for a full ten minutes is another one of those Scouting "urban legends" that once said, become gospel. I have taken a section on water purification from the Backpacker's Field Manual written by Rich Curtis, director of Princeton University's Outdoor Adventure.
--------------------------------------------------------

Boiling
Boiling is the most certain way of killing all microorganisms. According to the Wilderness Medical Society, water temperatures above 1600 F (700 C) kill all pathogens within 30 minutes and above 1850 F (850 C) within a few minutes. So in the time it takes for the water to reach the boiling point (2120 F or 1000 C) from 1600 F (700 C), all pathogens will be killed, even at high altitude. To be extra safe, let the water boil rapidly for one minute, especially at higher altitudes since water boils at a lower temperature (see page 68.)
----------------------------------------------------------

Our crews typically have two types of water; purified used for drinking and desserts that have no boiling requirements and unpurified used for cooking and dishwashing (with the final rinse being a boiling rinse). Since we are heating the water to a boil for cooking, it handles the purification for us. We add the food once the water starts boiling. For more information go to www.princeton.edu/~oa/manual/water.shtml.
