We had an 18 yr. old that was over weight for his height & talked the Dr.
into allowing him to go on the trail anyway. About day 7 his knees had had
enough. He needed to be driven back to base camp and was subsequently sent
home on the train (fortunately for us, he was 18 & could travel alone).
On our ride home we (the adults on the crew) debated what to do with his
patch. We didn't want to just give it to him as if he'd finished like the
rest of the crew. We all felt he should have done more preparation in
reducing his weight before we left. What we came up with was to award a
patch that represented his experience. We sutured over an "injury" that we
cut into his patch (careful not to ruin the embroidery!). He got something
less than a normal patch, we avoided having to withhold his patch
completely.
If he'd left because he: "just didn't feel like continuing" I wouldn't know
how to react. I know that I've had head colds that could pull me off the
trail. I think you'll need to determine if you think your guy's issue was
more medical rather than mental. Looks like your gonna earn your pay on
this one. I'd be interested in how you solve your dilemma.
