With 17 backpacking crews and 1 Cavalcade crew over the
years, we've never withheld an Arrowhead Patch. We've
had two people who did not finish their treks.
One was a youth crew member who fell and fractured an
arm when he tripped over a stump while helping to hang
bear bags at Copper Park in 1997. His father had to
travel to Philmont and bring him home. The boy returned
to Philmont in 1998 for a Cavalcade, completed a
backpacking trek in 1999, took part in a Kanik adventure
in 2000 and spent the summer of 2001 on staff at a camp
in the Valle Vidal.
The other casualty was an adult who had a bad hip and
couldn't continue after the 4th or 5th day. He wound up
returning to CHQ and helping out by repairing Philmont
equipment and delivering supplies to the back country
camps. A year or so later he had hip replacement surgery
and has taken part in four subsequent Autumn Adventures.
I suppose one of our crews might vote to withhold an
Arrowhead from a crew member who really didn't try to
complete a trek but we've never had to face that
situation and I doubt if we will.
