You bring up the height / weight issue.

Who failed?
The BOY because he was over the guidelines? Or the leaders who let
him go on the trek? If the boy is a big kid playing football and in good
shape, no problem.

The LEADERSHIP? If he is a grossly overweight, perhaps the adult
leadership is at fault for allowing him to go because they didn't want to
forfeit monies owed to Philmont.

We had similar problems this year. One boy who didn't meet the
height/weight, he played footbal, but is a jelly belly. We sent him on the
easier trek of the 2 crews. Another boy has had 2 episodes of altitude
sickness, dad got the MD to not mention it on the physical. He went on the
easy hike also, had a problem the 3rd day, they brought him down, pumped him
full of fluid and Tums and back on the trail. He made it.

We mulled the cases over amongst the leaders and talked to Philmont.
Philmont seemed willing to take on almost any kid. Before we left for
Philmont, they said that they would be willing to keep the kid with altitude
problems in CHQ while we were on the trail if he had problems.

You know, we're not awarding Medals of Honor. If Philmont was concerned,
they would hand out the Arrowheads based on how many came off the trail
succesfully, not on how many started. If my son didn't finish, but tried his
best, I would be damn mad that he didn't get his Arrowhead.
