Re: [Philmont]: Water Treatment

Sorry, but this is absolutely, 100% incorrect. The "iodine is equally
distributed throughout the water" about 2 seconds after you shake up the
container. The one hour time frame is to ensure that the iodine has
time to do its job (i.e., kill all the critters) at the typical ambient
temperatures of Philmont stream or well water (i.e., between 5 - 20
degrees C).

The addition of a capful of Polar Pure to a potful of water about to be
set on a stove to be boiled will perform exactly as I described - that
is, despite its dilution, it will kill everything in the water as the
water heats up (long before it boils) because the oxidation rate is 264x
at 90 degrees C versus 10 degrees C. [And if you were going to boil the
water long enough to evaporate out the iodine (which BTW would take
quite some time), well you didn't need the Polar Pure in the first place
then.] The only exception would be if the water was so badly
contaminated that the small amount of iodine contained in one capful of
Polar Pure was completely consumed before everything was killed. I
suppose some of the stagnant ponds at Philmont (e.g., those at Deer Lake
Mesa or Devil's Wash Basin camps) might so qualify, but whatever the
Polar Pure didn't get in such cases, the boiling would. And remember,
this is not a cure-all panacea, just a <very highly effective>
supplement to "normal" water purification protocols.
