What will the Arrowhead Award mean to the injured(?) hiker versus what will
it mean to the rest of the crew that endured the blisters and sore muscles
and sore backs? Each of my eleven Arrowhead Awards mean something very
special to me and this years represent significantly more pain that in the
prior ten treks combined (even though I was in the best shape of my life).
If the hiker was not ready for his best Philmont experience, did anything in
the shakedown hikes demonstrate his apparent lack of resolve? If so, the
question is "Did the hiker really want to go to Philmont or did someone try
to pressure him like a parent, a scout leader, or even a friend?"
I would vote to award the Arrowhead Award, he paid for it.
Just my thoughts,
Wally Feurtado

Subject: [Philmont]: earning the arrowhead patch
Hopefully this will not become toooooo long of thread. If a youth does
not finish the trek (last four nights were spent in base camp health
lodge with a sore (strained?) back) should he be awarded the arrowhead
patch? I know this is a tough decision....the rest of the crew
volunteered to carry is equipment so he could complete the trek and I
know he took tours of the Villa and several other sites while waiting in
base camp.
The feeling is that this would cheapen the patch for those of crew that
endured blisters and sore muscles and backs to the end but we don't want
to be unreasonable.
