RE: [Philmont]: Philmont by Southwest Chief

We had an Air Force Academy student as a ranger. He did a great job, and
the crew really enjoyed him. I don't know if you can request a ranger, but
if your crew does stop at the Academy, they might enjoy having a student
from there as their ranger.

best regards
Bill

I don't have Amtrack experience so can't answer that question for you, but
one of the responses said "sure beats driving". While that may not work for
everyone, you may want to consider it if you have the time. I thought our
crew was crazy for wanting to drive from St. Paul, MN in 2001 but they had
a blast! They rented a 15 passenger van, had the back seat taken out and
all their gear fit inside. There were only 6 on the crew so there was lots
of room and the price was quite reasonable. They toured on the way out,
went to Pike's Peak, Garden of the Gods, stayed at the Air Force Academy in
Colorado Springs (excellent experience), stayed at a motel one night and
camped the rest. They liked it so well we're (I get to go next time) doing
it again in 2003. We have a full crew of 12 this time, and will rent two
vans and add an extra day for whitewater rafting on the way out there. If
you can afford the time (we took 19 days total) it's a great way to go. It
may not work for everyone, especially if you have advisors who aren't
comfortable with driving big vans long distances, but it wasn't a problem
for our crew.

 Philmont by Soutwest Chief

I am looking at transportation options to Philmont in
2003, one of which is taking Amtrak's Soutwest Chief
from Chicago. It's scheduled arrival time in Raton is
11:38 AM. Could anyone that has taken this train in the
past comment on their experience; specifically, should I
schedule to arrive in Raton on the same day as the trek
arrival date at Philmont, or should we plan to arrive in
Raton the day before, and spend an extra night?

Thanks,
Paul Nepermann
advisor, Trek 621G
