From the FWIW Category: In 1972, one of the Contingent Advisors from
Keystone Area Council recommended that we treat our leather belts with
Neat's Foot Oil. Going to excess, I and many of the other Scouts on
that trek wound our belts into a tight curl, put them inside coffee
cans, and poured in enough Neat's Foot oil to submerge them about an
inch deep. When the level of the oil stopped going down (several weeks
later), we took them out and hung them up to drip dry for a few more
weeks. Note that they came out extremely dark, like they had already
been worn for many years. We considered this to be pretty cool looking,
and I remember being asked about it a lot when I returned to the Ranch
in '73.
Final result? - not yet known! I wore that belt for my entire last
(Senior) year as a Scout, then put it away for 15 years while I did the
perpetual matriculation thing and got a job. [Note that it did slightly
oil-stain my Scout pants for a month or two that first year.] It came
out of my Scout trunk in early 1988, and is basically the only belt I
have worn with my uniform for the last 14+ years. It is still going
strong (and I wear my uniform a lot). At this point, I suspect it will
outlast me....
