Our troop returned from a 10 day short trek to Philmont on August 20th. For
our crew of 10 this was the first time there for 9 of them (I was there 30
years ago). For the last 18 months or so I've been absorbing the wisdom and
experience of those of you who are Philmont veterans and share that
experience on this list.
I want to say THANK YOU to Coop Wright, Wally Feurtado, Dr. Bob, John
LeBlanc, Hikin' Mama, and everyone else who contributes to this list. From
the information on this list, I was able to train our crew well enough that
they had a wonderful experience at Philmont.
Being on a "Short Trek," we had a trek prepared by Logistics for us. While
we questioned a couple of their choices in camps (after we had been there)
they did an excellent job in providing our crew with a "taste of Philmont."
Our trek went like this:
Day 2: We were dropped off at Cimarroncito Turnaround and hiked to
Cathedral Rock camp.
Day 3: From Cathedral Rock camp we hiked to Cimarroncito. Did Rock
Climbing with a side trip to pick up food.
Day 4: From Cimarroncito to Lamberts Mine camp. Lamberts Mine camp was the
worst camp we encountered. Did program at Cypers Mine.
Day 5: From Lamberts Mine camp to Mt. Phillips camp. Spending the night on
top of Mt Phillips provided us with a beautiful sunset and sunrise the next
morning. Outside of 35-40 degree temperatures and very strong winds the
weather was very good there. No rain, no hail, no clouds.
Day 6: From Mt Phillips camp thru Clear Creek (where we picked up water) to
Crooked Creek camp. Did our conservation project there.
Day 7: From Crooked Creek camp to Beaubien with a food pickup at Phillips
Jct. Beaubien was our 1 bad experience as the staff person in charge of
dinner was running 1/2 hr late and so she turned the propane burners up on
high to heat the stew and really burned it. The next morning the same staff
person was late getting the branding started so our crew was late getting out
and the crew behind us needed to be on the trail so they didn't get to
participate. And yes, I did make note of that on our evaluation along with
the staff person's name.
Day 8: From Beaubien to Black Mt. camp where we did the black powder rifle.
That night, Black Mt camp was overfilled.
Day 9: From Black Mt camp to Bear Caves camp. We stopped at Crater Lake
camp and did the Spar Pole climbing and prepared dinner there before heading
onto Bear Caves (which was a dry camp). We were the only crew at Bear Caves
camp that night. The next morning we had a wonderful view of the Tooth of
Time and the sunrise.
Day 10: From Bear Caves to Lovers Leap turnaround for pickup. Hiking in from
Bear Caves camp provided us with a view of the TOT the entire route.
Comments from the boys the last night ranged from "I had fun" from the
younger ones to "In my wildest dreams I couldn't have imagined an experience
like this". Listening to each one of them that night just reinforced the
feeling that all the planning and work to make this trip happen was worth it
and made you realize why we're in this -- for the boys!
