[Philmont]: Arriving at Philmont a Day Early

The following item off the one of the Venturing lists triggered a thought
regarding the perennial question regarding when to arrive at Philmont. I
know nothing about the Whittington Center other than what you can see from
the road, but if there facilities include allowing camping overnight, it
would be a great jumping off point - do a program there the day before your
scheduled Philmont arrival, leave after breakfast and arrive at Philmont
early / mid morning. (brackets are my editorial additions).

The NRA will also be glad to help set up a Shooting Sports program at the
(Whittington) Center in Northern NM (on the Highway 64 from Raton to
Cimarron - coming from the North or the East you will likely drive right by
it). I know they talked the High Adventure Folks while they were at
Philmont and were very excited about working with Scouts. You could do that
going to or from Philmont or as a separate activity as the two camps are
about a hour apart (actually, more like 30 minutes).
