I would suspect the bulk of the odor and grime is in the padding, as it is
regularly soaked with sweat, salt and grime. I'd suggest cleaning it with
a mild antibacterial detergent -- soaking it with sudsy warm water and
rinsing it thoroughly. Repeat this several times, making sure you press the
soapy water out of the padding each time so clean rinse water and the sudsy
water can penetrate it. Then hang it in the sun to dry, thoroughly, or
you'll have mildew problems. It might be helpful to make sure you empty it
and let it dry well each time you use it. I know I'm guilty of just washing
the contents and storing everything back in there, but it's probably better
to make sure the pack too, is clean and dry before storing it. Good luck!

philmont Subject: [Philmont]: Stinky Backpack
I have a serious and somewhat embarrassing problem. My backpack stinks! I
don't mean it is inadequate. I mean that, after goodness knows how many
trips, it smells bad. Real bad! I'm certain others have experienced the
same dilemma. Just ask those people you hike with. How can it not develop
a
certain aroma after hiking for hours in the heat and humidity of the
Southeast (I live in Louisiana)?
What is the solution to this problem short of buying a new backpack? How
can
a backpack be cleaned and deodorized?
